Dreadfuls

The October test group

Help me build Dreadfuls.

Join my October marathon. Rate every film you watch.

Try it on The Exorcist.

This flow is still a work in progress.

Why I made it

Every October, my wife Ana and I watch a horror movie every night. Each year gets its own marathon, and we plan it together.

We kept score in a Google Sheet. Last year, four of us were in it.

But a number in a cell can’t tell you if a film was actually scary. Or if the story held up, or if you’d ever watch it again. That’s the part we end up arguing about.

So I built Dreadfuls. It’s only horror, and it asks those questions.

How rating works

You don’t type a score. You place it.

  1. “How was it?”

Pick a skull. Each one is a range, so you’re never guessing what a number means.

  2. “Which did you like more?”

Then it puts your film next to ones you’ve already rated. You pick, and that narrows down where the score goes.

  3. “How scary was it?”

Scariness, then Story and Rewatchability if you want them. Scariness is the one only a horror app would ask.

  4. “Would you tell a friend to watch it?”

One tap, and it nudges the score.

  5. Your score

Tenths either way if it’s not quite right, and you see where it lands before you save.

Swap any night, or every night.

The films might change. Streaming services add all kinds of scary movies in October that we don’t know about yet. We’d love for you to watch the ones we picked, but you can watch whatever you want.

It isn’t finished

  1. It changes daily. Sometimes hourly.
  2. That’ll keep happening all through the marathon.
  3. A screen might look different tomorrow than it does tonight.
  4. What you tell me is what changes next.

What joining means

  1. Rate what you watch in October. Marathon films or not.
  2. Use it on your phone. It’s a web app. You add it to your home screen, and there’s no App Store.
  3. Tell me what breaks. Or what’s confusing, or what you’d change. Just text me.

That’s the month.

Thirty-one nights, and an app that isn’t finished.

And a few people to help me break it.
